One was the blue kite resting against the wall, close to the cast-iron stove; the other was Hassan’s brown corduroy pants thrown on a heap of eroded bricks.

The kite and pants symbolize not only Amir and Hassan's relationship and situation but also Afganistan's situation.   Pashtuns got what they wanted, the kite, by not helping Hazaras, the pants.  Now because of that they have destroyed Afganistan, the stove.  The rusted hole in the stove will only grow bigger if the two stay divided. The pants are on bricks which could also suggest having the capability to build a new.
